Tire guy says that a 225 wide tire is not good for A4's...

Well......not exactly.
He said that with the wider tire the weight of the car is spread out more and doesn't allow the tire to heat up as much (or something to that effect). Therefore, if you are not an "aggressive" driver (like taking every highway on ramp at 20km/h above the limit) the wider tire will wear funny (unevenly) thus causing noise. I need to decide whether to put 205/55 or 225/50 tires on my 16x7.5 Momo's
Is this true??
Would this be the cause for those who have noise problems with the Potenza RE730's?
Sorry to bother you guys again with this but I am making up my mind this week.
Your input is greatly appreciated
Thanks

A general rule of thumb: you will have more traction with a wider tire. In terms of tire heat up, for street tires its not significant like race tires where getting to the heat temp range for the tire is important for maximum traction. Example would be soft compound tires of racing slicks on race cars.
