Default How about falken ziex 512's from edgeracing?

$41/tire + shipping. They are H rated (I wouldn't throw an S rated tire on there), and they are available in the 195 size.

I would expect those should last 50K+ or so. They do have a 420 treadwear rating.

If you're looking for something cheaper, then it's time to shoot down to Pep Boys, and take advantage of their $99/4 offer.

Default marshmallow sidewalls

It's bad enough you're driving on a 65 sidewall...an S rated tire is about as soft as they come these days. An H rated tire should leave you with some semblence of steering feedback even with the 65 series tires.

I have 195-65-15's on my honda with H rated tires. I can't even imagine how bad the steering would get if I put an S rated tire on there (and it's no picnic now either).

Default What about liability...If an accident occured over the rated speed?

People can take you to court for anything these days.

Default Some shops won't even install or sells these tires to you...

if your OEM tires were higher than an S rating (it becomes a liability for them).

so you don't think H rated tires are unsafe at constant speeds of around 80?

Default Both tires will go 80 mph...

There is more awareness around selecting the correct tire for a car, every since the ford-firestone fiasco. Ultimately, the car manufacturer selects the appropriate tire for a car, and nobody wants to accept liability for installing something different from what the car manufacturer specified.

My objection to the S rated tire (112 mph rating) is not based upon liability...just the fact that it's a mushy tire. You find them on the likes of a Geo Metro these days. An H rated tire (130 mph rating) is 3 levels above the S rated tire...so there should be a significant difference in sidewall stiffness.
