I have a TON of play in my ball/socket pushdown system. it's fine UP/DOWN.. but LEFT/RIGHT it is VERY loose. what part(s) do I need to replace?

in the tunnel. Someone posted pics of a modded passat shifter, where they replaced the stock bushings with something harder. Not sure how to pull the linkage out though (this is a piece that the lower part of your short shifter bolts to...you probably need to access it from underneath the car...of course the transmission might be in the way).

Which I've heard is a pain in the a$$ to do. Having just taken apart my shifter yesterday, I can confirm that there is a lot of play in the ball joint part, which if you factor in the length of the lever can translate into a lot of play at the handle (didn't want to say ****).
