On the topic of winter tires, how low do you let the tread get?

Mine are obviously too worn for snow but have plenty left for dry and wet weather, I just dont remember how much tread I had last year

They tested tires at 2/32 the legal minimum and braking distance in rain doubled , just imagine the a snow tire in snow or on ice. Ask yourself would you rather get a few extra dollars wear out of a tire or see the underside of that 18 wheeler you are following?

Modern snow tires have a softer rubber compound on the top half of the tread. The soft rubber is better on icy surfaces. For severe winter conditions, replace tires well before they reach the wear bars. OK to drive them in the summer, as long as you don't mind some humming.
