Today the torsen was "serviced" by an experienced technician at my dealership. The two large ball bearings were replaced with fresh ones and the problem apparently was that both of them were wearing... it happens after 108K miles.
The differential spins more smoothly now, and I hope that the problem is solved... As this has cost me the following
$30 RP Max Gear fluid
$90 in parts
1 favor from an "A tech" (some good boozer, well deserved too)
The tech who did the work has obviously done this before as he didnt even blink at the task, and just proceded to disassemble it like I would approach changing my brakes.... not much of a challange for him.
There were metal shavings on the magnetic catch plug... which catches the shavings for the entire transmission I think. There werent gobs of them.... just a few which is normal, as there are lots of friction parts in the gearbox.
Good news is that the differential is not fuxored, and the bearings hadnt siezed up or started self destructing just yet... which is a very good thing as those bearing parts could have made their way into the spider gears of the torsen which would have been a $890 (my cost) $2000 at impexfap.com Boo Boo. Torsen diffs are NOT cheap. In a couple of months I may very well want to send this one out to stasis for the 4:1 upgrade tho... That would make winter driving that much better with snow tires.

I know...far-fetched...but stranger things have happened. This just doesn't sound like something that should happen at 108K miles. If it was, these boards would be filled with these issues.

on this car with clockwork regularity. Let's just write this one off as a rare one offer and be done with it.
