I just bought a used 2000 S4. I'm not a lead foot, but......
I've only had it a couple of weeks and have been taking it for test runs to show friends etc., so I have been driving more aggressively.
I drove it from Albany, NY to Atlanta and got about 26.5mpg (note the spec'd hwy mileage is 24mpg). I have used 2 full tanks since then driving mostly city miles w/ a fair amount of stop-n-go. I have gotten about 19.5mpg on these 2 tanks. (spec'd city mileage is 17mpg)
My '96 auto & '97 5spd A4 2.8's both get consistant mileage: about 22.5mpg day to day, and 27mpg on highway trips. The '97 gets a little better city gas mileage as expected since it's stick.

Well...
I believe it is a great AWD system...but lets put it this way...
We have Quattro IV Permanent All wheel drive...Notice the IV...i.e. 4th generation
This is BMW's 2nd time around with AWD, and it's not their trademark.
I have no doubt the 325xi or 330xi is a great car. I'm sure it drives awesome, feels awesome, and looks awesome. But, if AWD is a big concern, Audi's the way to go. Plus,if money is a factor (when is it NOT a factor), Audi's are soooo much more practical. For a 330Xi you could get an S4 instead @ the same price.

90% city...I take it to the dealer, they put it in cruise control, drive it, and get 22 highway...
I have saved all of my gas receipts, and hope to have Audi reimburse me for this...

It's a stick. I like stick. If you'll be happier with auto/tip, then GET it.....
regardless of what other folks say or have. Many of the S4 owners on AW have auto/tip, and love it; it's still a very fast car with tons of torque. BTW, if you think you can't afford an S4, think again. As a standard S4, I bought mine used for under $30K from a private seller. I paid a couple of K more for the wheels and exhaust. Do an exhaustive search; there are a few GOOD deals out there.
