Default Tranny Fluid Please Help ASAP!

I just got a 96 A4 Auto Tranny non Quattro. I went to change the oil today and after doing so I noticed problems with my transmission. The plug I unscrewed and was unscrewed using like a 5/16" alan wrench. It was a fairly large plug and was losened going the opposite way. After putting the oil filter on, I put 4 quarts of oil in and the oil was over filled. Did I by mistake drain the tranny fluid or what? The plug was kinda far back under the car and not close the to filter at all. Is that what I did? My car shifted perfectly until after this "oil change." If thats the case how do I add the tranny fluid or where can I get it done at? I live 50 mi from a Audi dealer so there is no getting my car there. Please help if you can.

Default Yes you did drain your tranny. You need to get the exess oil out to or that could cause problems.

Maybe get a shop manual for your car. Its called a Bentley manual and they are on ebay.

So how am I going to get the car somewhere to have this done, because I dont have the tools to put the tranny fluid back in. Would it be safe to drive it a short distance to have it done?

So it was for sure the tranny fluid? Again the plug was probably even and closer to the front pass tire and kinda stuck out a little (a little more noticable). Plus it also came unscrewed reverse what normal screws go. Hopefully it is just the fluid because if not I'm f'd because I dont have a lot of money to get the car worked on with.
Thanks for all the help so far!

Default do NOT drive an auto tranny with no fluid... you're asking for trouble...

also, don't run the engine with too much oil in it also.

I'm not too familiar with the auto trannies, so I can't tell you exactly where to fill it... do a quick search for Kris Hansen, I think he did this on one of his cars... he has a write up maybe?

Default correct me if im wrong, but i thought there was a bit more to changing the auto trans fluid than....

.....removing the drain plug and refilling it. i thought you needed a vag and it had to be up to temp etc, or is that just for the tip's?

Default Re: do NOT drive an auto tranny with no fluid... you're asking for trouble...

I was in Springfield, IL today so I made a stop at the Audi dealer. They told me it would have to be pumped into the tranny with some sort of "special" pump and that it would need 3 quarts of fluid at like $18 a quart. When I got home I stopped by a mechanic and they said they would probably be able to pump the fluid in the tranny by just running a hose into it. But ya I'll get it towed...should only be about $50. I drove the car just a little bit (1/2 mile) so hopefully it didnt mess anything up.

Default yeah, I know you gotta pump it into the manual trannies..

at least that's what on of the guys I talked to did with his 12v when he changed the tranny fluid.

If you're good friends with this mechanic... maybe you can sucker him into bringing the pump and fluid to your place and doing it with the car on jack stands/ramps... if not, a tow is cheaper than a new tranny
