Default Tranny making a ticking noise in first gear

I have a 98 1.8t a4 manual w/ quattro, and the other day i noticed a noise coming from by my shifter. it was a slight ticking noise when i would accelerate in 1st gear. Now when i drive the noise is louder than my exhaust and i can feel the ticking in my shifter. It only happens when im in first gear and when i push down the clutch it goes away. Anyone have any suggestions.

Default I have the same problem (I think)....

is it just from the shifter or can you hear it in the transmission? iirc, it is caused from pits that develop on the gear. It's not hurting anything but it is very annoying. You can't just replace the gear because it is machined onto the mainshaft. Basicly the only thing you can do to fix it is to replace the transmission. If this is your problem and you want to replace it look for a used 2.8 transmission. You can find a decent one with low miles for around $800

Default Sounds like your mainshaft softened up on 1st gear......

I'd still recommend having someone look/listen to be sure, but it's most likely pitting in the driveside of the 1st gear on the mainshaft. Does it go away during decel?

It won't catastrophically self destruct, you can drive on it for quite a while. It will hurt your resale value of course.

It doesnt go away at all unless i push down on the clutch. You can hear a slight noise when its idling and that too goes away when i push down on the clutch

Default that doesn't sound like the mainshaft issue then.

I have that problem and it doesn't make any noise that I notice unless you are applying gas. If you're coasting in gear there is no noise. As soon as you apply load (i.e. give it gas) you get the rasping noise. If I put the clutch in the noise stops too.

The noise happens anytime in in first gear unless he clutch it pushed down.

Default Wow, that's an oddball. Need to get someone to listen/look at that for you.

Might just be a bad engine/trans mount, and your linkage is rubbing on something?
