Tranny problem?

Seems as if I have transmission problems. My mechanic informs me that my car never wants to hit 5th gear (98 a4q auto/tip)so it remains in fourth gear. What could be the problem? He suggested changing the tranny fluid may solve the problem, but stressed "may". Any ideas? I don't know what to do! Apparently neither does my mechanic.

Get ready for some bad news. Audi tips/auto trannies are notorious for giving out on people.
I'm a victim. 1998 AVANT A4 tip went bad with 92,000 miles.
New tranny costs `1700.00 to 2000.00 and to put it in another 3,000.00. If you have a warranty on your car better use it, or try to sell the car
