Car is a 98 2.8Q

On a cold start the 5sp auto transmission will just rev up in first gear and not upshift into second. This only lasts for a short time (20-30 seconds maybe?). It's not slipping, it's solidly in first gear. If I throw it into tiptronic and shift it manually it shifts fine without a problem. After that first "manual" shift it will shift perfectly on its own from that point on.

Is this something anyone else has experienced? Any ideas of what the fix may be? I'm a serious do-it-yourselfer, and especially if it's something easy don't like to pay a dealer to make repairs.

i dont think thtas normal, my doesnt rev to redline, only about 2.5-3k

My 97 2.8 hesitates for a moment through 1 and 2 nd for about a minute in the morning

My car does the same. I read somewhere it is normal and it is this way to warm up the engine faster.

and to answer your question, no not redline. 5900 rpm. hehe just below redline.

mine shifts early (2-3k) even when cold, i usually use tip mode when cold though

i really doubt thats normal.. thats a horrible way to warm your engine up.
