Default Transmission issue

When downshifting into second at speeds above 30MPH the gears grind. No other transmission problems. Dealer has suggested changing fluid and adjusting shifter linkage before looking into changing a synchro. Question is, will changing the fluid or adjusting the linkage (not an inexpensive procedure) do any good? I suspect the synchro, which more or less means new transmission. I can also drive indefinitely without downshifting into second gear above 30MPH. I have 130,000 miles and it's a 98 2.8. Thanks.

Changing the fluid and flushing out the clutch fluid will definitely improve things but if your on the same clutch at 130k then it may showing some wear. Good luck.

i change my tranny fluid every 50,000 km (not too sure what it is in mileage tho)

but i recommand you to open your tranny and to check well those syncros because if they are noisy downshifting they might become noisy upshifty and do more damage with time...

Default I just had a similar issue...

5th was sticky to engage (or even stopped engaging completely). I was also hearing a "whirring" noise from the shifter. The dealer replaced my clutch a week or two prior due to excessive wear (from the previous owner) and they said that the problem was fixed. The noise continued, and now I would occasionally have gears grind. 5th Stopped completely again so I drove to the dealer in 4th. They open up the tranni and find metal shavings and here I am with a new transmission. It sounds like you're having a similar problem and people's advice to me was to have the transmission looked at and that changing the fluid will only do so much. If you're able to, have it looked at...

Default My opinion, you have a bad synchro.

No oil or adjustment will fix it. I am looking at my second 5 speed now.
I could be wrong...
Pick up a nice used unit or have it rebuilt.
