The freeware VAG-COM will allow you to access the TCM, and if the multi-function switch gave a gear-select that didn't make sense, the TCM will show that as a fault in switch "125". If that's the code that comes up, there's also a chance the trouble is in the connector, not the switch itself; you could change an expensive switch, causing a lot of work or expense, when a corroded connection was the real problem to begin with. The trans connectors are fairly easy to reach, after the driver's side wheel is taken off.

My car went through a short spell with limp-mode a few years ago. After disconnecting the multifunction and solenoid connectors, blasting them with WD-40, and connecting/disconnecting a few times each, the problem hasn't returned.

Got my 3rd-party cable today and hooked her up with VCDS-Lite, got this:

VCDS-Lite Version: Release 1.1
Wednesday, 09 March 2011, 15:45:43.
Control Module Part Number: 8D0 927 156 Q
Component and/or Version: AG5 01V 2.8l5V USA D03
Software Coding: 00000
Work Shop Code: WSC 00000
VCID: 3B09B4EF3A6B
3 Faults Found:
18152 - Tiptronic Recognition Switch (F189): Short to Ground
P1744 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
00293 - Shareware Version. To Decode all DTCs
27-10 - Please Register/Activate - Intermittent

I looked up the 00293 and that is the "Multi-Function Switch (F125): Implausible Signal" error." So I suppose the next step is to try and clean the connectors for the MFS.

Any suggestions on the Tiptronic Recognition Switch error?

My '96 is pre Tip-switch, but it must be a switch that detects when the shifter is over in the paddle position. The magnets for the hall-effect detectors are also sometimes a problem when they get loose. All this stuff is under the shifter trim plate.

So you just sprayed WD-40 into the connectors? I'll be giving this a try tonight if the weather holds out, fingers-crossed

Yes, there are two connectors on the driver's side, low on the front of the trans, for multifunction switch and solenoid valves. These are prone to pick up dirt and water, so I'd start by washing them off first. One connector has the common wire retainer that pushes in to release. The other connector rotates to disengage. Open them up, and spray both pin and socket parts with WD or your prefered contact cleaner. Couple together for a few cycles, then clear codes and see what happens.

I've been fiddling around with this connector in the attached image for a while but can't seem to get the connectors off, any suggestions?

So is the problem related to that split in the boot? If there's any corrosion, you could unclip that ty-wrap, pull back that torn boot, then dunk the connector in some hot vinegar (I'm serious) for a few minutes. Flush it with water, dry it, then the WD-40. Seal that tear with superglue or silicone sealant.

^^^ What he said. ^^^ Not sure about the vinegar, but might work. Otherwise Napa sells electronic cleaner that works really well. Definitely try to fix the connector b/c that isn't a cheap part and requires removing the tranny mount to access the switch to replace. Lot of work for a simple multifunction switch.

It worked! I have reverse again, and it isnt going into Limp mode.

It's still kinda sluggish between the time you select reverse and the time it decides to engage it, so if it seems to do it again I guess I'll try again with the WD-40
