OK, I suppose this is kind of strange, but I've got a friend who has a A4 1.8T that has a serious transmission (automatic non-tiptronic) problem. It has had problems in the past with resistance (she described it as a delay between neutral and first where the car would just rev before engaging) to shifting into gear from neutral into first, and this morning, it stopped at a stoplight, and wouldn't shift into gear. It remained in neutral and just revved. What kind of problem could this be? Help would be greatly appreciated.

Had them flush out the tranny fluid and do some other rehab maintenance, also I think they put some product in there, maybe Lucas? I don't really care about that car, so I let the mech go to town... either way, it seems to have helped, the car stays in gear and the tranny is running well.

I would say do cheap stuff first like change out the fluid (don't know if this is DIY or not). Possibly the trans is going, but I dunno.
BTW it never got fixed on the Explorer.
