Transmission on the way out?

The transmission on my 2000 1.8t 5 speed just did somthing quite strange.
I was heading back to college from a weekend at home, about a 40 min drive, the first 25 mins of which is highway, which i did at about 80 the whole way.
When i got off the highway my car refused to allow me to shift into second or first gear. I finally got it to jam into second, then it would go to first. It has been making a little bit of noise ever since, and is still hard to throw into second when downshifting.
Im wondering, is my transmission about to kick it?
Assuming the worst case, can anyone give me some kind of approximation on costs for replacing it?
Thanks

but I do experience the same issue from time to time. Try double clutching to get it into second when it gets stubborn. I find that works when it decides to be finiky. When I can't get mine into first I leave the clutch in and go to 3rd gear and then it allows me into first. Kinda wierd, but whatcha gonna do. I also notice that if you let the clutch out so it just barely engages it'll pop into 1st as well.
I try not to force it, cuz I don't feel like shelling out the $$ to buy a new tranny right now =P

It sounds like you might be losing the 2nd gear syncro.
Dump the old fluid and replace it with a good synthetic GL-4 spec gear oil. While you're at it, check the rear end too (use synthetic GL-5 in the rear).
If changing the gear oil doesn't quiet things down, it's time for a rebuild or get a used one from a salvage yard (like www.shokan.com). The A-4 5-speed isn't really known for being failure prone. Does it also make noise if you're coasting along in neutral?
Cheers,

first, try a change in gear oil. this might help. any normal independant shop has good stuff for you.
second, a replacement, used 1.8T tranny.. probably your cheapest option, get em from a reputable place like dadsauto.com.. you can usually search car-parts.com and places like that for used transmissions. this will likely cost you between 450-1000 for the tranny plus labor
third, an upgrade to a used 2.8 tranny. these are about the same price as a 1.8t tranny, but with better gearing overall, especially if you're building up and modding, etc. Mebbe 100-200 dollars difference.
fourth, go with an s2 6-speed through tjm motorsports (this now includes KMD tuning in jersey and momentum in CT as affiliates) this, including an s4 rear conversion and all labor and everything, should be about 7 grand.
lastly, remember to do the clutch and flywheel and all the little wear items while it's dropped, to save you the hassle of doing it again. most of the cost comes from the labor of dropping and installing the transmission itself
