I am sure you can all imagine how I feel, but what I am really wondering is there anything significant that stalling the car repeatedly can damage?

Also, why is stalling so violent on are cars? My guess is quattro but I am not sure.

Default try this...

get out on a nice flat vacant road and let her practice getting the car to roll in 1st without trottle. if she can do this half the battle is over. the hard stall is a quattro trate! your clutch probibly isn't too happy about this, but it souldn't cause any major dammage.

Default Try teaching her in a car that has zero torque like a Yugo.

She'll be much better for it.

Default I did the same thing.

It took her a few tries but she had a few good starts. I think the biggest problem was that as the car started to move my wife would jump her foot off of the clutch.

It will take some time, but she will learn.
