Turbo/BOV sound...
#13
There's nothing wrong with BOV if used properly...
For instance, turbo eclipses do use BOV, BUT they are plumbed like a BPV. Instead of venting to the atmosphere, it, too, is re-routed to the intake tract, similar to our own A4's.
BOV and BPV serve the same purpose...to protect the turbochager. A BOV can be setup as a BPV and a BPV can be setup as a BOV. It's all about nomenclature. A BOV tend to signify air vented to the atmosphere as a BPV is to signify redirected air.
In reality, cars like the turbo eclipse are really using BPV. It just really case specific. Another example are imports with turbo kits or N/A to turbo conversion. Their MAF is close to the throttle body entrance. Putting a BOV before the MAF is fine because the ECU will NOT take into account the air being vented. The air that is metered is matched with the appropriate amount of fuel. Hence, the car can use a BOV.
A BOV venting to the atmosphere is particularly bad for our cars as it is venting air already metered by the ECU out of the system. (i.e. the B
PV is after the MAF) The end result is more fuel to a given amount of air. Hence the rich condition.
Okay, if you want to use a BOV, as in get that cool sound when shifting, you'll need to plumb it like a BPV. Meaning, you have to recirculate the vented air back to the intake tract somehow.
