Default Turbo Characteristics...

I was wondering (at what RPMs) the Turbo typically kicks in... and does it provide any added boost when on the freeway?

I feel that the turbo in my new '01 isn't doing it job properly... I used to be able to feel a nice surge after 3500 rpm or so (in 1st, after a stop), but now it kicks in (if at all) much later... In addition, a few days ago I was able to hear the turbo spool up when I accelerated from a standstill, but now all I hear is the whine after 4000+ rpm...

sigh. I'll have to do some more test drives before I can make a truly accurate assessment... sigh.
-elton

Default Boost guage

Get one and see what's going on. Typically (for my 1999 anyway) boost from the turbo is determined more by throttle position than rpm (full boost is available from about 1800-2500 rpm to about 5500-6000 rpm, depending on chip, widest range available stock). Normal driving the turbo doesn't really get involved, unless you're accelerating the engine runs in a vacum state (like a normally aspirated engine). The more you push on the throttle to accelerate, the more boost you get. Typical numbers were: easy (1/4 throttle) acceleration ~0-3psi, moderate (1/2 throttle) ~3-5 psi, hard (3/4 throttle) ~5-7 psi, maximum (full throttle) ~7-8 psi. Those numbers shift up with a chip.

As for the freeway, if you're just cruising, at a speed near most speed limits, the turbo is not boosting, but the faster you go, the more power (and hence more boost) is needed to fight aerodynamic drag.
Regards,
Rodney

Default Re: Boost guage

Rodney's right, you can't really tell when the Turbo kicks in during RPM's.

I boost a lot during regular driving on the street. Just going up any slight incline, the turbo will kick in. Or if I up shift too early, on a bigger load, I can boost .66-.70 bar.
Cori
