I've run turbos for decades and done teardowns of dozens. Synthetic doesn't coke, period.
Regular oil will carbonize forming a solid crystalline mass, as you describe. Synthetic oil will, at *much* higher temperatures, only form a soft "clot"; which under ANY oil pressure will break up or pass through.
You can test this yourself with a tube and torch.
The R&R for ANY engine with a failure, but particularly a "turbo failure" is to identify the specific cause for failure.

NE1 notice that it is open and facing the turbo (the hottest compenent)? It is shield again the engine but not shield again the cat and the turbo.
