Turbo glows red and car isn't chipped.............normal?

MMMM saab turbo, my friend's 96 900 turbo SE is sooo fast
He has exhaust and boost controller but he stomps on me in my A4. Wierd thing is hes supposed to run a 15.9 stock so that boost controller must be adding so much power

Before getting chipped it happened to me.......
I was on a long uphill strech of I-84 in CT at WOT for a mile or more (about 110) and then pulled off for my exit. Popped the hood in a nearby dark parking lot and yes, it was glowing, along with about 3-4 inches of the downpipe.
I've heard it's not bad provided you let it cool down properly.

It's just like any turbo, turn up the boost, go faster. The SAAB starts out ahead with larger....
displacement engine, and much lighter car.. IT should stomp on your car. Just be glad it's not an SPG.. Then it would be embarrassing.
