Turbo that glows Red Hot!

How normal is it to have the turbo in a 1997 A4 Quattro 1.8t glow red hot after a 10 minute ride on suburban roads at about 40mph in 40 degree weather? The car is bone stock.

if its glowing red hot make sure to let it cool off for a few minutes before turning the car off

Can you describe the driving conditions?

Were you in boost or not, do you have a boost gauge, what sort of boost were you seeing over the last 5 miles before you parked?

your wastegate might be stuck

Can you take the turbo off at all? Happened to me before. If that keeps up, your seals are going to go, and your turbo will die soon after. If you can, unbolt the turbo and run some hi pressure air into the wastegate. You should watch it actuate. If it's not opening and closing correctly, you've found your culprit.
