Default Is turbo lag bad in 1st & 2nd?

Just got a 1.8QM. In first gear from a dead stop the engine seems to bog and then suddenly take off between 1-2000 RPM. There is a similar but not as severe effect in 2nd gear. Is this from turbo lag? I thought the turbine was small enough that lag wasn't very evident.<br>The effect is so strong that I have to pay close attention to and lean off the accelerator or I will jump forward when it kicks in.<p>ravik@xenon.stanford.edu<br>Volcano 1.8QM

Default

It's a gearing problem, not a lag problem

Default Can this problem also be related to the heavy flywheels that Audi uses?

Default Only time you will feel the lag is...

When you start in first, on a rolling start. Meaning the car is at its ideal RPM and is moving whether you are coming from a moving at a higher speed, or engage the clutch without stepping on the gas beforehand. What you will feel it when you step on the gas, the engine will slowly increase RPM's and speed, and then a second after, you will feel a boost before the car hits it torque peak at 1750 RPM's and you feel the strong but smooth acceleration.

Default Sounds more like you're not revving high enough...

Try launching the car at above 2000 rpm, slip the clutch out and it should be nice and smooth, also don't shift into 2nd at anything below 10 mph. The engine and tranny will feel tight and be pretty quirky during break in, but become less so as you put some miles on the car.<p>Regards,<br>Rodney<p>'99 A4 1.8tqms

Default It is related to the heavy flywheel that Audi uses. That is why we developed the lightweight flywheel kit

Default I'd go with under-revving (is revving/reving a word?)

I think you need to give it a little more gas. I suppose the flywheel could be at fault. If you really want to roar off the line take the engine to about 3000 rpm, gently release the clutch and stay on the gas. Vroom! Soon the rest of the cars at the light will be in your rearview mirror. Careful it is very addictive.
