Default Turbo Wastegate Rod Means New Turbo?

My 1998 A4 1.8T Quattro had the emission light come on. After checking it out the dealer tells me some hoses are cracked and BTW you need a new Turbo because the Wastegate rod is broken.

Does this really mean I've got to shell out over $3K to fix this? That's about half the value of the whole car.

The car is not making any unusual noises, and for all I know this stupid rod has been broken for a long time.

How common is this?

Suggestions? Should/can I buy a used engine with more power and drop it in there? Will all other B5s fit? Would B6 or B7s? Could I drop in a 2.0T?

Default AWE has their k04 kit on sale for 1299

Pretty good price IMO with programming and all.

Simple answer is yes you need a new turbo. You used to be able to buy a new wastegate actuator from ECS but they don't sell them anymore. Forge makes a nice billet one but its expensive and not worth spending on a K03.

The dealer does not sell it separate.

Default Very common problem. Leave the engine alone, all you need to do is replace the turbo...

You can get a used turbo for a couple hundred bucks or a new one for about $600.

Avoid the dealer at all costs. Either DIY, have some friends help or go to an independent shop that works on Audi's.

Default Or, the dealer is a dolt. I have never seen a wastegate rod break.

How much boost is it running?
