Default turn signal help needed!

I have a 2001 Audi A4 1.8T and driving home the other night my turn signals stopped working out of the blue. At the next turn I tried the signals again, they flashed one and half times then both inside and outside signals stopped flashing (without the lever popping back into the neutral position.) All of my hazard lights still work so I don't think it's a bulb. This happened two days ago and the problem is still consistent. Does anyone have any idea what is going on with my car?!?! I'm a broke college girl who clearly wasn't thinking about the repairs ahead when I bought my lovely car, so the less expensive better! Any advice would be helpful! Thanks!

Your hazards relay switch needs replacing. It's a common problem on these cars.

Default a comment....

Unfortunately, "less expensive" and Audi usually don't co-exist together. If your hazards are working properly, then the relay(hazard) is probably absolutely fine. I would check the switch mechanism in the turn signal stalk assembly, especially if it is not self cancelling. We had a similar issue with our 00 A4. It involves pulling the steering wheel, airbag, and turn switch assembly(about $140 without labor). If your going to attempt this repair yourself, please follow the airbag removal instructions in the Bentley factory repair manual.

Default the hazards relay and the turn signal relay are the exact same part...

The fact that her turn signal flashes once and then stops is an easy way to tell that it is in fact the hazards/turn signal relay, at least in 99% of the cases. If the stalk was at fault, she'd most likely get no flash at all.

Default There are two relays in the switch. Turn signals can go and hazards still work. Happened to me twice

replace the actual switch.

Default like PETE said. Hazard relay switch. part is about 40 bucks. You can replace it yourself easily.

All you have to do is carefully pull the trim off (use a few knives to gently pry it off) this will give you access to the hazard switch. Pull the switch out with needle nose pliers or something. Be gentle, yet firm, it will come out, pop new switch it, replace trim piece, done. Took me about 15 minutes the first time, about 2 minutes the second time, yeah mine has failed twice... POS

Default a response...

It depends on how the stalk breaks. That switch internally, is somewhat complicated(the fact that a number of circuts go through it)and not made very well by Valeo. If it was the hazard relay, the lights would not flash with the hazard switch turned on. Usually, if the toggle breaks inside the assemble, the stalk will not self cancel and the problems start from there. We had the same issue in our 96, and then in our 00. Stalk assembly fixed it both times. Sometimes the turn signals would flash if the stalk was jiggled, but would never self cancel.

Default Yes, the hazard lights do still flash. There are two seperate relays in the switch, someone has

taken one apart and swapped the relays inside, thus making the turn signal work and hazards not work. I have had two hazard relay failures. Both times the blinkers started acting up, fast and then slow, then no blinking. But the hazards still worked when the button is pushed. I am talking about a 2000 and 2001 model. Maybe older models have different relay?

Default For simplicity, we call it the "hazards relay", but like Money Pit explained, there are actually two

relays within this one part called "hazards relay switch". One relay controls the hazards and the other relay controls the turn signals. It's the turn signal relay that fails, so that's why the hazards still work. But the way to fix it is to replace both relays as they're within the same part number.
