Uch, my idiot brother borrowed my a4 and 'accidentally' put 87 in it instead of 93.

Default I always use 87 for over 2 years now. Never have any problem, no pinging, no hesitating.
Any long term damage? GIAC chipped

I got a response from AWE that my GIAC 93 will adapt to 87 to 100 octane

is rev easier than his 97 Quattro.

Default You're not getting the same power that you would with the right octane rating
Sure it'll work and adapt, but you bought the chip for increased performance, right? If you're gonna put in cheap gas, take the chip out. It's a waste.
