Default understanding suspension PR codes and weight ranges. Part 1.

So there is more to it than S4 suspension wont fit on an A4... there are reasons and they are anything but clearly indicated in etka.

the info you start out with looks like this (my 98 non sport 2.8 quattro tiptronic avant)
1BA (type sport/non sport)
0YS (front axle load range)
0JK (rear axle load range)

There are several codes for sport suspension. Their codes and how much lower than comfort suspension:
1BD (20mm)
1BE (20mm)
1BV (30mm)

Front Axle load ranges are detailed in ELA pages in etka. Load range codes are as follows
0JB
0JC
0JD
0JE
0JF
0JG
0JH
0JJ
0JK
0JL

Each of those front axle load range codes has several suspension type codes which correspond in ELA pages to the load capacity of that particular configuration in Kilograms.

since we're working with a 0JK equipped car lets stick to the possiblie load ranges for the car we've got.

0JK-1BA 919-952 kg <what I've got>
0JK-1BP 919-952 kg
0JK-1BB 919-952 kg
0JK-1BT 919-952 kg
0JK-1BC 919-952 kg
0JK-1BD 919-952 kg
0JK-1BE 919-952 kg

Rear Axle Load range codes
0YQ
0YR
0YS <what I've got>

since we're working with a 0YS equipped car lets stick to the possiblie load ranges for the car we've got.

0YS-1BA 656 KG <what I've got>
0YS-1BP 656 KG
0YS-1BB 656 KG
0YS-1BT 656 KG
0YS-1BE 678 KG
0YS-1BD 678 KG
0YS-1BV 678 KG

Now that we know what we've got on the car... lets see what the current axles load rating is in LBS. So between 919 & 952 + 656 = 1575-1608 * 2.2 = 3465 lbs - 3537 lbs which is pretty close to the historical guestimate of 3594 lbs for a 98 2.8 quattro tiptronic avant.

Default PART 2

lets say we're looking at an 01S4.. I've found lots of vins to play with on autotrader so lets pick WAURD68D51A139894 which is an 01 S4 sedan with a 6mt. This car breaks down to having the following codes.

1BD (sport -20mm)
0JJ (941-982)
0YS (678- )

This car has a axle rating weight of 3561 - 3652 lbs. The Avant we're working with is 3465 - 3537
which means the suspensions have load capacities differing by 96-115 lbs.

Front VS rear
The front S4 0JJ (941-982) load rating does cross into the 0JK (919-952) load rating of the Avant. If we go with just the base numbers thats a 22kg difference or 44.8lbs. this difference could go as high as 138 lbs tho, but that is at the extremes of the differences. If we presume an average we get 91.4 lbs.

The rear load ratings have a base difference of 22kg or 48.4lbs 0YS+1BD = 678kg vs 0YS + 1BA = 656kg.

So the springs of the S4 sedan are going to have slightly higher load capacities than the ones currently on my Avant. Will the Avant ride a full 20mm lower... maybe not it might ride 19mm lower. However there are several cases in which the car would not behave in this manner... try to remember I've got the heaviest possible combination in my avant which is on par with most S4's for curb weight. If we were attempting this on a 97 1.8T manual quattro sedan I think the ride height would end up being substancially different.

This weekend I'm going to do the swap and if the info I've dredged up so far is true then the avant should sit close to 20mm lower.
