Default uneven tire wear - OK for Quattro?

I am replacing one tire due to a bulge in the sidewall from a pothole.. all tires are Continental's ContiExtremeContact Hi-Performance All-Season with about 8,000 miles on them. Will replacing just one tire cause problem for anything in the drivetrain due to uneven outer diameters from wear? If all tires were worn down, what types of problem can occur... damaged differential?

Thanks

Default I believe they must not differ by more than 4/32" according to what I've read and seen posted....

you can get 1 tire shaved down if not time to buy all 4 and the tolerances are above 4/32"

I know tirerack.com will shave them down and 2 local places here do it so shouldn't be to hard to accomplish..

Replace both sides or all four. IIRC over 2mm is out of spec and could cause damage.

Default Your differental will go.

When I was working the desk at a repair shop we got a jeep gc where sams club had put two new tires on the rear and left the near bald on the fronts. It was several thousand miles and the dif was toast.

Default what are the symptoms of a bad differential? the reason I ask...

when I bought the car in 2005, it seemed that the tires were very unevenly worn, and since I was not aware of the issues with AWD and uneven tires, I drove on the tires for almost two years. When I had my car at a shop last year, trying to diagnose excessive drivetrain slop (something that developed gradually since I got the car), the mechanic said that my rear differential had "a lot of play"... I always assumed it was movement of the entire differential that he meant.. could he have meant "play" as in "internal backlash"?

Default if I really do have a damaged rear differential, what should I expect to pay for a used one?

does a rear diff for a '01 B5 1.8T fit a 2.8V6 Quattro?

you mean the center diff of the Jeep? A rear or front diff should not break in this case
