it's an open diff unlike clutch type differentials. The reason for this is so you can turn. Only on power that it would bind - hence why the car can push on power on a U-turn
I've run 2 different sets of tires (235F/225R) on the A4 for thousands of miles. Also, my Audi provided spare donut is much smaller than it's factory wheels. When installed on the front, it's really fun battling the car pulling to one side like mad :/

diff on my wife's '01 Wrangler 4.0L Sport manual trans just by dumping it into reverse. dealer replace it along with the rear part of the exhuast, etc. under warranty.
