I've got a 2000 A4 Avant, which I love. However, what I always really wanted was the S4 Avant, which, back in 1999, was rumored to never be coming to the US. *sigh*

How much longer do you think the current S4 Avant will be made?

How long until the new one?

I figure it will be something like:

fall 2001 - MY 2002 - New A4 available in US - Avant available in Europe
fall 2002 - MY 2003 - New Avant available in US
fall 2003 - MY 2004 - S4 unveiled in Europe

Oh, crap...the new style S4 Avant is just too far out.

Should I buy one now or just hold my horses? I'm afraid they'll stop producing them soon.

I was told no more S4 Avants in current form after this year. Last orders will probably be taken in late spring (?). I have no idea when the new S4 Avant will be out, but I think your guess is pretty good.

Since I also have an M3 for my speed/handling fix, I've been looking at trading my A4 for an allroad. I plan to test drive the S4 Avant & allroad back to back and then decide. I do a lot of skiing, cycling, etc, so the allroad would come in a little more handy than the S4 Avant.

becase the backside will probably just look like the current A6 avant, but smaller. I assume this because the current 2002 sedan looks like a smaller A6. The A4 and A6 avants don't look too different to me. I would probably wait for the new model to get the supposed V8 (and forget about blowing the turbos when chipping) and get a roomier car too.

As you said, it will be a while before the new S4 Avant will be out. In my mind, however, the question is IF. The current model is about $43K. That's pretty steep for a small wagon (albeit fast), and we know that marketing to enthusiasts alone isn't enough for automakers in this country. Marketing the S4 Avant in the US may be an experiment on Audi's part, and we may not see the next generation.

No one knows with absolute certainty but the general consensus that there will not be a 2002 S4 Avant. Nor for that matter a 2003. At least not the way we know it. Audi production lines will be pretty busy next year cranking out new A4s. S4 Avant is very cool to us but to everyone else it's a specialty car. I don't see them selling it in US, especially with the push on the Allroad marketing in US.

I think they will be shutting down the 2001 model production in March. S4 will prob get a complete rehaul in MY2003. There is a chance they will drop the turbo engine. Avant production may be behind by a year. So there is very little chance we will see any S Avant in a new form till MY2004

I planned to get the S4 Avant in a year and pass my A4 Avant to my wife to replace her car. Now Audi is pushing me to do it earlier. My problem is that I am not sure I can afford to have 2 new cars now, so I am looking at diff options. One of them selling the A4 Avant.
