Default I use a Pela too. When removing the filter from the top ...

I put a plastic bag around the whole thing so that no oil drips down on the engine or belly pan. Keeps your hads cleaner too.

Default thats how i do my changes as well. loosen with hands or tools first and then the plastic bag method

its kinda tricky to get the filter turned with the oil inside of it and the bag all twisted but it works like a charm and is quick as well.

Default i heard totally different

OC and FC at the same time

why would you want to have clean fresh oil run through a potentially dirty contaminated filter?

Default unless i'm misunderstanding you, i'm talking about replacing the filter every 5K but oil every 10K

Then you have older, dirty oil running thru a new, clean filter, only every other 5K maintenance routine. I thought that was one of the benefits of the synthetic oil.

Default I got mine from him too... they're also great for lawn mowers/power tools, etc.

Handy-dandy tool.

what about all the crud at the bottom of the oil pan, that comes out of the drain plug?

Default Rephrase the question:Is it better to change the oil than not do anything? Not everyone is a tech...

and not everyone has access to a lift or even ramps. Few people realize the filter can be grabbed from above too. In the bigger scheme of things, old filter is just fine, 1/2 q of oil is is fine...a lot remains behind in the engine no matter how much you drain it anyway. FTR- Honda says 5k on oil 10k on filter. In Europe, just oil service is more common on all cars. It's better than not doing it at all. Filters RARELY clog. Cut open the oldest filter you can find, no junk will be trapped in the pleats.

Default Again, different schools of thought...

The procedure with any oil extractor is to run the engine for @5 minutes before extracting. This is said to allow any particles to get suspended in the oil that you will then extract. One poster in the past said that he did the oil extractor, then opened the drain plug - nothing came out. This leads me to beleive that the oil extractor method is effective.

At what point do you say it doesn't work? What if you pull the drain plug, let it drain, then stick your finger in there and see some leftover oil/particles? How do you propose getting that out? and does it really matter?

If you are getting all (or nearly all) of the oil out on a regular basis - you're doing OK.
