Got my first Check Engine ('98 30V ) and have always worked on my own cars. Always made it without a scan tool of any kind... until now. Is it time to buy and is the VAG-Com the way to go? Ross is showing $199 for software and cable. Is it hard to use? Can I do this? Should I do this? The support looks good, they have their own forum... I need to be talked into this, please help. Thanks

you can just order the OBDtool for $79. It will come with the unregistered version of VAG-Com, which allows you to check engine codes and recode modules. You need the registered versions ($99) to log data. If you just want it for checking/clearing codes, this is the way to go.

http://www.obdtool.com</a

From reading vag-tool's site it says they only support thier software if you are using their adapter cable. I wouldnt be planning on logging any data just worried if there would be problems not buying it from vag-tool. Have you used obdtool? Thanks!!

Their service was great when I ordered it, but I have not had to talk to them since. I am sure they would be helpful, I don't have the experience to back that up. Any questions I have had have been answered here on AW. The product has worked well for me, and I would recommend it.
