Default Which vag-com is right for me?

I'm looking at the current vag-coms available from rosstech and I do know they plan on releasing a usb hex-com very soon.

It would mainly be used on

99 passat
98 A4
2000 Jetta
2002 Jetta
95 GTI
and some others...

On top of that I'd like to use it as a generic obd reader with some open source software but I'm not sure which vag-com is best suited for me. Any suggestions? I've been holding off for the new hexcom (usb) but just came across this from their website which makes me wonder if it would even work with other non rosstech software

*This interface requires a special driver to be installed on your PC. It does not emulate a COM port. That means this interface will not work with any other software besides VAG-COM.

Also this will be used on a winxp laptop. Again though i'd also like to use it as a generic reader for other cars (ford, gm, etc). Does the vag-com have an option for this or is it strickly VAG based? Does anyone know of any open diag software that will work if I purchase the USB version?

Thanks!

Default VAG=Volkswagen Audi Group. Not sure how it would work on

Fix Or Repair Daily or Gremlin Motors vehicles.

If you are working on that many cars it would seem like you would spring for the Hex-Com (since it is less than $100 more than the least expensive model).

Just my .02 worth.

Default Not sure if you know this but there is a VAG-COM forum...

The Ross-Tech people hang out there, too. I know the Ross-Tech will read codes from Generic OBD-II equipt cars except for GM and Ford. Good Luck.

https://forums.audiworld.com/vag/</a
