Get the Ross Tech.
If you buy the alternate cable, you will go through weeks of frustration because they simiply do not work. There are no software packages avaiable for them.
This wsa my experience:

I have followed all instructions to the letter.
Your interface does not work with Ross Tech software.
Version 311.2 is no longer available.
VWTool, a freeware will not work with it.
Basically, nothing works.
any ideas?

No , our products do not work with rosstech software , they will only work with what they come with .
here is the trouble shooting guide..
You can get the USB instructions and download files using the following link: http://www.alpha-bid.com/media/Produ...structions.pdf
As an alternative some find this driver works as well:
http://www.ftdichip.com/FTDrivers.htm
http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm
Please make sure ignition key is 'On' and cable connected to car for power.
Most of the time it is just a matter of getting the 'TEST' to show 'OK' by setting the COM Port in the device manager to 1,2,3 or 4. Be sure to load the driver from our store page here:
http://stores.ebay.com/alpha-bid/Man...Downloads.html.
Then perform the 'TEST' in the Vag-Com Software trying Com Port 1 to 4, until the test says 'OK'. Be certain that the cable is plugged into the car with the ignition on. You can also make sure that the cable is occupying COM port 1, 2, 3 or 4 by changing the setting in Windows Device Manager.
If your getting an error 'No response from controller', try lowering the 'Baud Rate' in the software. Also make sure the controller you are trying to access exists on the vehicle.
thanks Yvonne

definitely buy the Ross-tech Vag com! I have had very good luck with the free version and a generic interface for basic code checking, but then bought the license for $99 which unlocks the SW for full diagnostics but it is not transferable and will only work on that laptop. I have had 2 laptops crash over the past 8 years and lost my Vag both times so now I have their full version and interface which I highly recommend. their interface is a smart interface so no license is needed, I can use it with any laptop! best $300 you will ever spend on a car!
and although I have never tried it, supposedly it will read basic OBDII codes on most other cars.
