Default VAG issues... unable to communicate with an 02 Passat

I was trying to help a guy out this weekend and couldn't communicate with the car.

He has an aftermarket stereo and remote car starter installed.

He removed the car stereo and we still couldn't communicate with it. Does he need to have the stock stereo installed as well?

Any help/advice would be appreciated by people with aftermarket gear.

Default could be a few things...

looking at Ross-tech's site, could be the K-line issue or could be that the car has CAN-bus circuitry.

I didn't thing the CAN-Bus was out then, but perhaps that is the issue and I need to buy a hex-com cable.

Default even with the stereo removed, the aftermarket stereo problem is in the wiring i believe.

was the adapter harness removed as well?

Default yes everything from the stock connector onward was moved...

take a look at the ross-tech article... makes me think the redesigned passat has the CAN-bus stuff

I have the ol' Ed P cable, so it doesnt like talking to cars with CAN bus, but again I thought that was a 2004+ feature

ross-tech aftermarket stereo article

Default hmmmm... that's good to know.

Ok so it isnt my setup then. Good

I was wondering if he needed to install the stock stereo to complete the K line circuit. Otherwise it would be open, and not functioning at all correct?
