Default Vehicle Shakes at 40-50MPH!!! --- Help

Vehicle shakes violently at 40-50 miles an hour. Happened this morning on the way to work. Is this the Quattro? my 97 1.8T has 55K...

Feels like its in the driveline...

anyone else had these symtoms? How did you fix them...

Thanks to all on the Board...

Default If you're in a cold snowy climate...it could be ice/snow packed inside the wheels...

check back there and remove any ice/snow. That will cause the kind of vibration you are describing.

Default If you drive over 130 the wheel weights fly off!!!

I had to have all my wheels re-balanced. I guess one carwash to many and one high speed run to many.

Default I had the same exact problem last night. Was driving around 60 mph (snow) and car suddenly shaked

so bad. I thought I have a flat or tires are out of balance (I got snows put in a week before). Slowed down to 50mph, still very bad. Car feels like it is going over small little bumps on the hwy. Now I am thinking I must have a flat. Reached my destination, got out and tires were fine. Maybe tire balance. I checked air pressure (normal) and remove as much snow inside the wheelhouse as I can. Drove out to the hwy again and was going to go to the tire shop. Hmm.. no more shaking/vibration etc. Smooth. Still don't know what was wrong, until this morning reading through the forum, and another reader has the same exact problem. Now you have the same problem. Reply from RKA suggest what I read this morning. So, I believe it is the snow/ice packed inside.

Default BUT -- The bizarre thing is....

it seemed to come and go... At 40 felt like i had parkisons... at 60 its was fine...

I am in seattle... its been extreemely cold the last few days but not a lot of moisture or snow.

I don't think its wheel balance... the car doesn't pull... How can I check if its wheel balance?

thanks... T

Default It is definately snow/ice stuck in rims--setting the wheel of balance. I had it in my old car and

I have it in my A4. That is why I carry a long stick in the trunk, so that I can clean the ice out of the rims before I go on the highway.

Default See his reply below- there hasn't been much snow or rain in seattle.

And not enough to stick in the wheels. It's gotta be something else...

thanks looey... I want to get it checked out, but I hate going to my mechanic without having a clue to wassup?

Wheel balance sounds good? I don't know how to tell us less i take it off and go to Les Schwab...

Driveline issue? maybe -- not really sure what to look for...
