I tapped into the vent light on my 99.5. All dash lights are on when the key is on so ...
You can follow this link for one way to tap ... alternately you can plug in this phrase in the search feature for other options ...

my 98.5 had that behind the stereo. can't remember the color, sorry...
reference an aftermarket stereo harness. it'll match up to the orange "illumination" wire, but NOT the orange with a black stripe. GL.

My instruments only light up w/ the lights on. From what everyone is saying, should they be on all
the time? Sounds like it would be easy enough to just tap into the illumination light for the vent, but I was just wondering about the instruments-lit-w/-key thing...?
