Vent tube for battery

Default Vent tube for battery
I was in the process of changing my battery and apparently yanked out the vent tube. Can someone tell me where this thing goes? I ran it through the hole in front of the flexible tubing towards the middle of the car. Hopefully this is safe.

Where does it lead to? Or does it just hang off the battery?
