Some very light smoke is coming from both side of my 2.8L engine(99.5 A4 Quattro 137Kmiles). It looks like it is from the exhaust manifolds. It's been like that for a while. No CEL. I guess it is due to the leaking oil from the engine getting burned on the exhaust. But i don't really know what is going on there. So any comments and suggestions? Thanks.

See pic of results of tensioner seal leak on drivers side. The driver's side leak makes a mess of components on the front of the engine. Since the passenger side is reversed (same heads, just turned around 180 degrees), the leaks tend to drip onto the exhaust.
To check the valve cover seals, remove the plastic covers and run your hand along where the seals join the covers to the heads (when engine cool) and if it's leaking, your hands will be oiled.

with some oil. The amount of oil/dirt cannot drip at all. Oil consumption is not much either.

the exhaust header is on the side of the head. The front seals will leak down under the timing belt and drip down below the exhaust. The tensioner will drip down the back of the head and onto the tranny, although I see how a few drips might hit the exhaust pipe thru there.

Do you top your oil past the full-mark? 2.8 is finicky 'bout that. Cats fail and leaks start, etc.
Have you serviced your crankcase/valve cover breather system? Clogged breathers/plugged suction pump/clogged check valve can lead to overpressure under valve covers and leaks ensue.
