Default Very short "cold engine" driving v. warming the engine by idling????

My trip to work is less than two miles so the engine never gets a chance to warm up. I know that this kind of driving is bad. My question is. Would letting the engine idle for 5 minutes before driving (which does allow the engine to warm) be beneficial. I know that idling for long periods of time is also not good. Yea, I could drive around until the engine warms up but that is really not an option most mornings. I guess I am asking which is worse, Engine idling or short trip driving?

Default I would drive the car at least some of the time until the engine gets to proper temp..and I would

change the oil every 3K for insurance. That's about all you can do.
