What do you mean?
Do Audi's and VW's share parts and platforms? Yes. Are they the same company? Sort of... Audi is a wholly owned subsidiary of VW, just like Bentley and Lamborghini (through Audi).
Are the cars the same? Many share some underpinings, even drive trains, but there are a world of differences between them. Where is Audi's future with respect to VW moving upscale ($40,000 Passats in the future)? Who knows...

Yep, very similar relationship...
Audi is the Volkswagen Group's luxury sports marque, sort of like Jaguar and Ford. In the past Audi was once an independent company. Actually several independent companies that formed Auto Union then got gobbled up by other companies, etc.

Agreed.
Audi and VW share the 1.8T engine (A4, Passat, and Jetta). And the A4 and Passat are similar, but other than that they don't do much cross platform stuff like Honda/Acura, etc.

More similarities.
Actually I think the Passat is similar to the A6's chassis with the A4's options of engines. Passat is definitely bigger than the A4. Also, the New Beatle and the TT share a very similar chassis and parts bin. Golf and A3 are similar parts wise too, but I don't know for sure how closely related they are. And 4motion for VW's is essentially Audi's quattro.
