When snow reports say "Chains required" as it often says for Stevens Pass, is it mandatory for cars with snow tires and AWD? I'm wondering if any Quattro owners with snow tires have had to put chains on going over any of the passes when chains are required. Specifically Stevens since I'd like to go snowboarding there after all the snow we've been getting.
Thanks
Vinay

Vinay,
You may want to check out tonights posts regarding the subject on the Wheels & Tires Forum. They're for Oregon, but informative nonetheless. There may be a similar statement on Washington's DOT page.
FWIW, I drove all over Washington's mountain roads the past couple of months with my A4Q and Nokian snows without a hitch. Now, nobody stopped me and told me I had to put them on (they wouldn't catch me in the snow anyway : ) The ranger on Mt. Rainier who was stopping everyone kinda smiled when he saw my A4. Just told a little white lie that I had "chains in the trunk" : ) I wouldn't actually USE them on my A4..you could buy the cables to make yourself feel better, but you won't need to use them if you have snow tires. Check the site for a more definitive, legal answer, but that's my experience.
Rich
'98 2.8Q sport
No chains needed. Only AWD and tires that are, at a minimum, M+S rated. Went to Stevens for boarding this weekend. No problems with my quattro w/ M+S rated Dunlop 4000's.

Washingt on DOT Winter FAQ's
