Default Warming up

Most people tell me to let my Audi warm up for 5-10 minutes when it's subzero temperatures out, but a recent dissenting voice has said anything more than a minute will ruin the engine. What do you all think?

Default why would you wait that long? The engine (and everything else) warms up quicker when driven...

Anything more than a minute is a total waste. When the engine idles at low rpms, there isn't enough oil pressure to properly circulate cold/thick oil, hence some parts are running poorly lubricated causing lots of wear. Don't do it. Just drive easy until the car warms up.

Oil has a harder time getting to the top of the engine at idle when it's cold

Default ^^ What he said ^^

Just stay out of the boost until the oil temp gauge starts to move.

Default That and few more points

Idling the engine for 30 seconds to a minute (if it's really cold), will ensure that oil has gotten to all critical points in the engine - assuming that the proper weight oil is being used.

Idling the engine for prolonged time will wear the camshafts. The catalytic converters will also not work properly until the engine is hot, and the idling engine runs dirty.

Idling an engine to warm it up will take a few times longer than driving it until warm.

Default Not true. The oil makes it up there just fine.

Try running an engine sometime with the valvecover off...

Just make sure you have plenty of simple green and paper towels before.

Default If that's a problem...

...get an oil heater. "Warming up" the car to with that is NOT going to help things.
