Default Water leak revisited...

A while back I posted a question about a water leak in cabin of my '97 A4. Well, the problem abated some and when I finally got around to it, I was able to clean out the cabin air intake (which was clogged with leaves).

However, the problem has - in the span of a few days - magnified dramatically. What was just an occasional trickle after a rain storm has turned into - quite literally - water pouring out of the dash onto the carpet. Water spitting out of the center air vents. Puddles on the carpet almost deep enough for minnows to swim in. It's all I can do to soak up the water...

Interestingly, it now often runs fine even for long periods. However, I recently drove to Columbus (about 70 miles highway) with virtually no leakage, but when I started the car after letting it sit for an hour, the water immediately gushed out.

I'm not a car expert, but I remember someone suggesting it might be the heater coil. Makes sense to me with what I know of thermodynamics, and it happened to my dad's Saturn at one point. Can anyone else offer confirmation/other suggestions? I trust the dealership about as far as I can throw 'em (not been a stellar relationship to date), and want to be as informed as possible before I deal with them.

Thanks!
Brian

When you say water are you talking about coolant. If you had a leaky heater core you would have coolant leaking into the passenger compartment. Coolant generally has a sweet type of smell. From what I have heard a heater core is a pretty big job on our A4's.

Or it is the drain hose from the evaporator on the AC. A common problem for all cars.

Good thought - especially since it's been super hot'n'humid in Ohio this summer, and the AC is on nearly all the time now.

Anyone know how to get at that? It was suggested before, but I'm not sure exactly what I'd have to do to fix it. (I'd prefer to fix it myself, if that's the problem, rather than deal with the dealership... I'm an electrical engineer, not a mechanic.)

Cheers,
Brian
