Default Water temp idiot light...... but no symptoms? (a little long)

I was driving back from school just now in fairly heavy rain on the highway in somewhat clogged traffic and for some reason, the water temperature idiot light came on. The weird thing is, the coolant temperature gauge is at one hash mark lower than middle, which is about right, and the oil temperature is at one hash mark above 150, so it's fine. The car accelerated the same, no funny sounds, nothing, but the light came on and just blinked the entire way home. Is this just because the sender (or maybe sensor) got wet or what?

I thought the water temp light only told you that the temperature is too high, not that you're low on coolant.
