Wear rates of tires

Is it normal for the rear tires to wear out much faster than the fronts with quottro? My GF's rear tires are shot but the fronts probably still have 10k left. The wear looks pretty even across the width, the outsides might be slightly more worn but nor by much. Could it be an alignment issue? Thanks for your input.

or real wheel drive assuming you aren't lowered. Sounds to me like the fronts were replaced more recently then the rears

we have around 30K on the car, part of that with snow tires. The OEM Goodyears probably have 20-23K on them. I just don't understand what would cause the rears to wear quicker besides alignment. Since the wear seems even across the tread I figured that was OK.

Even though the quattro split is 50/50, the rears are still getting more traction due to the shift in weight, and are therefore accelerating the car more than the fronts. Most people rotate the tires front to back often enough not to notice the difference.

I had the same problem...rears were wearing at 2 or 3 times the rate of the fronts. Turns out the toe was horribly off on the rear tires. Too much toe in on the front tires causes the outside of the tires to wear, however, on the REAR tires, the entire contact patch wears excessively. Aggressive driving really shouldn't cause the rear tires to wear significantly more than the fronts in our cars. If you're running the same tires front and back, and you're positive that they are indeed wearing faster, definitely get the alignment checked. Ask the dealer for a printout of the alignment before and after, so you can confirm that this was indeed the issue. It would suck if it wasn't the issue, and you bought a new set of tires, only to trash them in another six months!

weight shift maybe but what about the heavy *** engine sitting directlyl over the front axel? I'm sure weight does shift but the front still has to have more weight/traction.
