in stop and go traffic while on the phone with joe@axis mine shat the bed... our guess is input shaft broke
went to put it in gear and hear clunk thrash grind shut the car off and pulled over to the median (luckily in left lane) and tried putting it in gear... gear goes in put nothing happens... speedometer registers speed as rpm increase...
time for 2.8 for real this time i guess
I'll keep you all posted when i find a minute to take it apart

01E transmissions could be had with wide ratio 1st and 2nd gears, and with a cast iron tail section...inherently stronger than 01A units.
But I do agree...call up Mark or Frank at ASP and see if they can strengthen your transmission.

Gotta admit that there are a ton more S4s making 300lbft + than A4s on 01As...

To figure its durability under a certain power level, you also have to factor in how much mileage is on the transmission, how often the fluid was changed, who was driving it, etc.
Fact is, I've seen way more 01A failures than 01E failures. But I have seen 01E failures as well. The 01E, properly strengthened by places like ASP or Stasis, holds up quite well.
