also check your CV (inner) bolts. I've seen that happen more than a few times, and that would cause your speedo to increase while you are standing still.

Syncros will go out with grindage (JHM pieces eliminate this) but never a failure. The old 5 speeds and late s2 and s4 late 96 model 6 speeds were strong as well. From my experience strongest (in order of strength) were RS2/S2/new s4 and late URS4/URs4 5 speed. I have a friend running almost 600whp on a urs4 5 speed. The older trannys were built for more torque due to the 5 cylinders being stronger and with more potential than the new 4cyl. or tt 6 cyl. engines. Even mild mods can put 400 lb. ft. into a 5 cylinder. This is my personal experience anyway, YMMV.

My 01 1.8TQM synchro in fourth gear stopped working about a year ago. It hasn't gotten any worse and you just need to be careful shifting into fourth. I'm planning on getting a B8 and selling the car privately in the fall, but was wondering if anyone had thoughts about whether it's a fixable problem short of the "$4000 for a rebuilt transmission" line I got from the dealer.
