Everyone here seems to love the APR chip, the GIAC chip, etc etc. Not many people seem to have opted for the Wetterauer chip, and I'm wondering why. What I've heard of the Wett has been mostly good, although I haven't heard much.
Some people here also seem to have paid the significant extra expense of getting a stock ECU along with the chipped one. The Wett chip negates this since it comes with a socket in which you can put the "super" chip or the stock one, and even switch between while you're at the dealer before you give them your keys.
Is this seeming functionality really just a gimmick?

No, it really works. I have a Wett on my 98 and it has come in handy a couple times. You don't hear a lot about Wett anymore because it's no longer the flavor of the month. Back when my car was new, your only real choices were TAP, Wett, and Neuspeed (GIAC got a couple mentions here and there but not many). My Wett has been flawless till late last week when all of a sudden my car wouldn't start with the Wett chip. Swap the stock chip back in and the car fires up. Dunno what happened
.
Anyway, bottom line, the socket is pretty handy and you don't have to pay $$$$ for a spare ECU.
