what "utter disdain" did audi have a while ago?
i always read in reviews that people had utter disdain for audis... the only major problems that i could think of was the alleged unintended acceleration problems... my father is very against audi probably for the same reasons other people don't like them... thanks for any info.

Lousy quality cars, along with anoying problems....
I love my audi (97 A4 1.8TQ soon to be chipped) but I'm going to BMW after this car. I still believe their cars are built better. My family owns five BMW's...I'm the "outcast" with the Audi. I really love the car and will never put it down, the service i get is unbelievable (may have something to do with th fact that my father has a history with dealer concerning several Porsche 911's), but i don't think I'll buy another audi just yet.

Another thought ?
I have a few Jewish friends who have an utter disdain for all German cars.
In fact when I showed my "new" car to my physician (with whom I am quite friendly) he accused me of driving a **** car.
Since I am neither Jewish nor German, I did not take offense to the remark, nor do I have anything against German cars.
But I can understand the grudge that some people maintain against the Germans, particularly those who lost families in the holocaust.
There was a huge discussion on this very subject on alt.autos.audi several months ago.
Beyond that, I can only speculate that Audi experienced some "growing pains" several years ago, and the "unintended acceleration" scandal didn't help their reputation any.

Re: what "utter disdain" did audi have a while ago?
Not sure exactly what that would be. My parents bought a '75 Audi Fox. Around that time, the Fox was winning all sorts of comparison tests, and was consistently rated as being an excellent value (good performance/handling for its time at a reasonable cost). So the automotive press did not have this disdain. As it turned out the car lasted 15 years and 100,000 miles, including 5 years in my hands. It was a very good car and reasonably reliable.

No disdain from my family....6 Audis
2 - '78 Foxes
1 - '79 Fox
1 - '83 5000 Turbo
1- '84 5000S
1 - '84 Coupe GT
1 - '97 A4 1.8TQ
No major problems.
The biggest annoyance I recall on the 2 5000's was the power window motors all eventually died.

Expensive, overpriced, and UA problems...
were probably the main reasons. They had big electrical problems in the 80's (5k and 4k models) and quattro used to be only available with option packages, not stand alone, and the packages were REALLY expensive. Add in the UA fiasco, and people would just not consider Audis when they were shopping.
As far as the **** thing, I'm Jewish and I know my grandparents would never buy an Audi. They have ridden in mine, but they also don't make the comments they would have years ago. My parents are even going to buy one, which is a big move. There is a lot of history there, particularly with older generations, that won't change.
