What is the advantage of an intake? what brands are there?

for 1.8t... evolution and lltek sell an intake kit, or you can custom make one (see Ray Khan's post)
from today. He's got a 1.8t, i think he said the "kit" cost him $65. Much cheaper than evo's $280.
As for advantages, more cold air into the engine is a good thing. Our 2.8 brethren gain more than us 1.8t boys. A couple more hp, depending on if you can keep the air cold enough... i think blackknightb5 has a cool setup with the heat shield wrapping.

keep in mind those intakes really really aren't cold air intakes
they will probably take in more hot air, if anything. For a real cold air, you'll have to go custom with tons of heat shielding and probably a different intake location.
