What is the advantage of a K&N filter over the stock filter?

Perhaps if you swiss-cheese your airbox...
the stock airbox is set up to allow a certain amount of air into container, i don't see a K&N really assisting. Now an intake is a different story, i liked the mid and high end improvment it offered.
